The performances are good but considering the brilliant cast the movie had, it underutilises every single one of them. There are few scenes where Jake Gyllenhaal and Jason Clarke shine but that is the most of it.
The film is shot beautifully, and in 3D, the dips and highs of the glorious peak are eminently watchable. What the movie actually is, however, is something different: a visually stunning and anxiety-inducing trip to the heights of Mount Everest that is never able to deliver on the emotional promises it make — because real life isn’t actually an action movie.
